This was a full day career-learning experience with speakers from The Gap Inc, eBay, Indeed, Mercer, and Josh Bersin.

Following an energetic intro from our founders, Anne Fulton and Jo Mills who shared the importance of redefining talent management, we welcomed Kate Bravery of Mercer to take the floor.

Kate gave an abundance of insights into how to create a thriving organization in an age of disruption. Spoiler alert: career and development opportunities are THE top driver.

Next up, Rob Ollander-Krane informs why Gap Inc. got rid of performance reviews and ratings and instead shifted to a growth mind-set organization-wide. The whole review process was costing 130k hours of time for both employees and managers, which equates to a whopping $3.3million in payroll. In fact, performance reviews only caused a heap of frustration and had no benefit. Rob talked us through the successful implementation of ‘Talent GPS’, an approach that is now delivering development conversations for 90% of employees monthly. These touch base conversations at Gap are working!

After a quick coffee break and a good chance to meet all the motivated individuals attending, Amy Centers shared the inspiring Dexcom career growth story. Results of the 2016 engagement survey showed that only 46% of Dexcom staff believed that “there was someone at the company who helps me with my career development” they knew something needed to be done. And then came the lightbulb moment: finding Fuel50 a tool that aligned with their fast-paced, dedicated and customer driven culture and would increase the frequency and quality of career conversations.

Anna Touzel and Shreya Nidadavolu then talked ‘Chaos to career pathing as a retention strategy in a fast growth world.’ As a company who help people get jobs, Indeed found that 90% of employees said they actively look for job opportunities. We were elated to hear that after introducing their Career Pathing initiative, Indeedians were now growing their careers.

Mike Martin followed, sharing the Ingersoll Rand success story. Their changed career experience framework led to engaged employees! Hot tip: listen to your people. Mike managed to pull out many great one liners during his presentation of “Road-map to a best-in-class career experience.”

Following a CareerLabs working luncheon Christine Landon & Mark Mansour delivered “Individualized career propositions”, giving insight into the strategy at eBay, of which their talented people are at the very core. The speed of change requires the rapid development of skills which means companies need to do more to support their staff in their careers.

Then came the pitch-offs! 6x dynamic presentations from Spark, T-Mobile, BOQ, LoyaltyOne, UNDP and Crown Institute. Well done to UNDP who won people’s choice for their initiative and uplifting presentation.

Key Note Speaker

The moment everyone was counting down for, renowned thought leader Josh Bersin, Bersin by Deloitte took centre stage to present “Catch the Wave – The 21st Century Career”. Everyone was furiously taking notes as Josh talked all about the future of work, career disruptions and why skills, in particular ‘soft’ skills, matter so much. We were gobsmacked to hear the mind-blowing fact that the reality of learning today is only 24 MINUTES PER WEEK! Technology has been a game changer but despite all the tools “we are less productive at work,” surprised? We were.
